By age 13, Josh was the Florida state mandolin champion, placed 3rd at the Merlefest Mandolin contest, and has performed on stage with Mike Marshall, David Grisman and Chris Thile. Josh Pinkham (13) - In the winter of 2001 Joshua Pinkham picked up the mandolin and learned his first scale and tune, and since then, he has improved exponentially with an impressive repertoire of tunes ranging from Old Time, Bluegrass, Fiddle tunes, Dawg, Jazz, Classical and Brazilian choros. Sierra Hull performing "Daybreak In Dixie" at Music City Roots live from the Loveless Cafe on April 23, 2014 She recently was invited to be an instructor at the Mandolin Symposium, and conducted the student Bluegrass Ensemble. She remains the first female mandolin player to be nominated for this award, and is also the youngest with her first nomination coming to her at the age of sixteen. This was Sierra’s sixth nomination for the title. She was nominated for 2013 IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year. She attended Berklee School of Music on the first ever Presidential Award Scholarship for a Bluegrass musician. In Byrdstown, Tn., where Sierra lives, they recently had The First Annual Sierra Hull Bluegrass Festival. For the past three years, Sierra has been invited to the IBMA, and has played with IIIrd Tyme Out, Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder, and Sam Bush. She also played with Alison Krauss + Union Station at the All Star Bluegrass Celebration II.
She has appeared on the Grand Ole Opry three times, and played at the Ryman Auditorium with Alison Krauss + Union Station, which aired live on CMT. In 2002, she won the National Beginners Mandolin and Guitar Championship at the Smithville Jamboree. Sierra Hull (11) - Sierra Hull is eleven years old and has been playing mandolin since the age of eight. I was impressed by not only their talent and what they had accomplished by that age, but also their maturity and commitment to their music. Sarah Jarosz was 12, Josh Pinkham was 13, and Jacob Henry Jolliff was 15. The two youngest were Sierra Hull and Scott Gates, both 11 years old.
